Forum Topic: Accutane Treatment Options in the UK
Post by Lily247 (16:37)
Hi everyone! I've been dealing with severe acne for years now and my dermatologist suggested trying Accutane. Does anyone know where to buy it legally in the UK? Also, are there any side effects I should be aware of before starting this treatment?

Hi Lily247! Thanks for reaching out. Accutane is a brand name for isotretinoin, which can indeed be an effective solution for severe acne that hasn't responded well to other treatments. However, it's important to note that it should only be prescribed and purchased through legitimate medical channels in the UK.
To get Accutane legally, you'd need to visit your dermatologist or healthcare provider who will assess your condition and determine if isotretinoin is right for you. If they decide it’s suitable, they’ll write a prescription which you can take to any pharmacy to purchase it.
Regarding side effects, they can vary widely from person to person but some common ones include dry skin, lips, and eyes; increased sensitivity to the sun; and potential mood changes. It's crucial that you discuss all your concerns with your healthcare provider before starting this medication.

Thank you so much for the detailed response, DocOnCall! I was actually thinking of looking online because it seemed easier but now I understand why going through a doctor is important. What about long-term effects? Are there any serious issues that might come up later?

You're welcome, Lily247! It's great to hear that you’re taking the right approach and consulting with professionals first.
Long-term effects of isotretinoin can vary. Some people experience ongoing dryness or changes in skin texture even after stopping treatment. There are also potential concerns regarding liver function and cholesterol levels which need monitoring during treatment. However, these generally return to normal once the medication is stopped.
One of the more serious long-term considerations involves joint pain or swelling that might not show up until years later. This has been noted in some individuals but it’s important to understand that research in this area is still ongoing and there isn't a definitive conclusion yet.
Again, consulting closely with your dermatologist about any concerns you have will help ensure you're fully informed about both immediate and potential long-term effects of isotretinoin therapy. They can also guide you on necessary precautions and regular check-ups to monitor your health throughout the treatment period.

That’s really helpful information, DocOnCall! I’ll definitely schedule an appointment with my dermatologist soon. Do they usually prescribe the generic version or do many people end up paying more for Accutane?

It's generally advisable to start with the generic isotretinoin unless there are specific reasons why your dermatologist believes you need the branded version, which can be pricier. The cost difference might not be substantial in terms of efficacy; both versions contain the same active ingredient and work similarly.
However, it’s also worth noting that some pharmacies may have special offers or discounts on generics compared to brand names, making them a more economical option overall. Always check with your dermatologist first about which version they recommend based on your medical history and specific needs before making any decisions.
If you’re concerned about costs, discussing financial aid options or patient assistance programs available for isotretinoin might also be beneficial. Your healthcare provider can provide guidance here as well.

That’s great advice! I’ll make sure to ask my dermatologist about generics and any other options when I go in. Thanks so much for all your help, DocOnCall!
