Accutane Roche Dosage Discussion
Forum Topic: Clarifying Accutane Roche Dosage Instructions
SkinCareSavvy
Hi everyone,
I was recently prescribed Accutane by my dermatologist for severe acne. I’m a bit confused about the dosage instructions. Can someone who has experience with this medication share some insights? My prescription says 40 mg daily, but I’ve read different things online. Is it okay to take it all at once or should I split it up?
Thanks in advance!

Hello SkinCareSavvy,
First off, congratulations on getting a prescription for Accutane! It’s highly effective for severe acne cases.
Regarding your dosage: 40 mg daily is a common starting point. The key here is to take it as directed by your dermatologist or the prescribing physician. Typically, you can take the entire dose at once with food, usually with dinner. This helps minimize potential side effects like nausea. However, if you experience any discomfort, splitting the dose into two parts (20 mg in the morning and 20 mg in the evening) might be an option to discuss with your doctor.
It’s important not to deviate from the prescribed dosage without consulting your physician first. They may adjust it based on how well you tolerate it or if there's a need for more significant improvements in your skin condition.
Best of luck, and please keep us updated on your progress!

Thank you so much, DrDermatology! That’s really helpful to know. I’ll stick with the 40 mg once daily as prescribed. If any issues arise, should I contact my dermatologist right away?
DrDermatology
Absolutely! Communication is key when it comes to medications like Accutane. If you experience any side effects or have concerns about your dosage, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dermatologist immediately.
Some common side effects include dry skin, lips, and eyes; sensitivity to the sun; and in rare cases, mood changes or depression. Make sure to moisturize regularly and use sunscreen diligently.
Also, remember that Accutane can cause severe birth defects if taken during pregnancy. So, it’s crucial for women of childbearing age to use two forms of effective contraception while on this medication.
Feel free to post more questions here as you continue your treatment journey!

Thanks again, DrDermatology! I’ll definitely keep those points in mind and will be extra cautious with my skincare routine.
I’ve been reading up on the importance of staying hydrated too. Do you have any tips for managing dry skin while taking Accutane?
DrDermatology
You’re welcome, SkinCareSavvy!
Staying hydrated is indeed important. Here are some additional tips to manage dry skin:
- Moisturize Regularly: Use a gentle moisturizer, preferably one that’s fragrance-free and hypoallergenic.
- Lip Balm: Carry a lip balm with you and apply it frequently throughout the day.
- Eye Drops: If your eyes feel dry, use artificial tears to keep them moist.
- Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your room can help keep the air from drying out your skin even more.
- Avoid Hot Showers: Take lukewarm showers instead of hot ones and limit shower time to minimize further drying.
Also, make sure you’re using gentle skincare products that don’t irritate or dry out your skin further. Avoid harsh scrubs and opt for mild cleansers.
